Stories in Stone
Volume Two

A guided walking tour through the East State Street Cemetery — ten stops, ten lives, and the town they built. Then back to the Olde Main Street Museum for the day hatchet-carrying Carrie Nation came to town.

The Tour

Walk Among the Stories

Laid out in 1860, the East State Street Cemetery holds the founders, soldiers, surgeons, and shopkeepers whose choices shaped Newcomerstown. On this guided walk, costumed and seasoned storytellers stop at ten monuments and tell you what really happened — the surgeries, the secrets, the racehorse, and the prison camp.

The tour begins at the flagpole in the East State Street Cemetery. Tours leave in small groups every fifteen minutes, so everyone can hear and see.

Who You'll Meet

Stop 1

Dr. Adam M. Beers

1840–1912 · One of the finest surgeons in eastern Ohio — and founder of the town's first newspaper.

Stop 2

William & Nancy Craig

1811–1879 & 1813–1894 · A retired merchant and his wife whose home was a station on the Underground Railroad.

Stop 3

Andrew Creter

Born 1791 · Came west with the Neighbor party in 1817 and built the Temperance Tavern.

Stop 4

Elizabeth Mulvane

Civil War nurse — one of the women who cared for the wounded when the nation tore itself apart.

Stop 5

The William Tidrick Family

A family whose name appears again and again on the rolls of military service.

Stop 6

Albert Zimmer

The lumberyard man — remembered beneath a striking Gothic monument.

Stop 7

Ann Eliza Kimble Hill

1835–1876 · A beautiful example of Victorian memorial art, carved with an angel leading a woman heavenward.

Stop 8

Adam Miller

1821–1900 · "Captain Miller" — canal boat operator and horse racer, resting beneath the famous horse monument.

Stop 9

Benjamin F. Miller

1842–1908 · A Civil War prisoner of war who survived the infamous Andersonville prison.

Stop 10

William Clow & Family

1846–1926 · From the battlefields of the Civil War to the industry that helped make Newcomerstown.

The Finale

Carrie Nation at the Sam Douglas Saloon

When the walk is finished, it's back to the Olde Main Street Museum to hear the story of the day hatchet-carrying temperance crusader Carrie Nation busted up the Sam Douglas Bar — a story best told standing in the saloon itself.

Enjoy drinks and fall desserts afterward. Come hungry, come curious.
